1. ping an internet ip address.

2. ping an internet domain ip address such as www.yahoo.com

If you can not ping successfully with these two methods you will have unexpected results.

INTERNET ACCESS FOR MEMBER SERVERS - if you need internet access, then point to the internet server by adding the internet server's ip address as an DNS alternate ip address. Or in some cases if there is not a stand alone internet server or proxy server. Such as a small business environment. Then point to the DNS server by adding that ip address to DNS alternate list.

Enable DNS Forwarders DNS Trouble Shooting

Root Servers do not have the abillity to Forward IP addresses, However you can modify the settings to enable forwarders on Server 2K.

Goto Administrator Tools and Select DNS.

Select the DNS server and expand nodes below it to expose the forward and reverse lookup zones.

Under Forward lookup zones there is an entry with only one dot("."). This tells the system this is a root server. Delete the dot zone.

Shut down the dns console and open again to refresh it on your dns servers properties page you can select the Forwarders tab and the enable forwarding check box should be able to be toggled now.
